Athena SWAN Network – Professional Lecture Series: ‘Women in STEM: successes and challenges’
As part of our Professional Lecture Series, Professor Dame Celia Hoyles talked to the UEL Athena SWAN network on 24th March 2015 about issues for women in STEM looking back over the years from a personal as well as policy perspective.
You are able to view the talk if you were unable to attend.
Talking from the viewpoint of her subject – mathematics and mathematics education – Dame Celia traced the trends for the participation of women.
Looking at GCSE level, for example, girls consistently perform better than boys and more and more people are choosing to study A level Maths. This being the case, this sparked debate on why girls are not choosing to do this subject if they are doing it well?.
There was further discussion on initiatives to increase representation in Physics and the extent to which these have been successful.
The discussion concluded on the topic of our networks at UEL with the question “How far in your networks do you share your struggles? Sharing the struggle and how people have helped is important.”
The opportunity to network was taken advantage of before and after the talk.
We are holding a number of events. For information see our Events page.
