Whose Voice Is It anyway?

Our image of women and girls in pop and rock music is constructed by men, if not at the beginning of the song-writing process then as intermediaries. Would this be different if there was greater gender equality at the point of recording and mixing the tracks? Based on the author’s original interviews, this talk will explore the professional lives of female studio personnel in Britain and question what it is we actually hear when we listen to a recording. What kind of shoes does a social worker wear, and why does it matter?

An occupational prototype is a socially shared understanding of an ‘average’ member of a particular occupational group. Occupational prototypes have an impact on the career decisions that we make (Moss and Frieze 1993) so a good understanding of the kinds of features that combine to make up an occupational prototype could be useful in developing our understanding of how people make career decisions and how we can help them make fulfilling choices.
This ta;l explores occupational prototypes looking specifically at the factors that are not directly related to the job itself, but include how a typical member of a profession might dress, how they spend their leisure time and their family life. Download the full abstract
Do lice deserve their lousy reputation?

The UK, and indeed much of Europe has seen an upsurge of head louse infestations with social, educational and financial implications. Parents are left to control family infestations with little support or information. This research seeks to undertake a “situation analysis” to assess the impact of head louse infestation in the deprived areas of East London through a multi-disciplinary approach that will embrace social, educational and potential infection consequences of louse infestations.
