Will fund research or policy development work, to help ensure migration is an equitably managed & socially just & includes voices of migrants & receiving communities in the public debate. Barrow Cadbury Trust Resources and Resilience
Will fund research or policy development in 2 main areas; New ideas in economics; & Community resilience. Grassroots focus is Birmingham or Black Country. Email/call to discuss before applying. Grant of £15,000 to £50,000.
Carbon Trust Research Challenges
To focus on overcoming the specific technical barriers that are holding back the next generation of low carbon technologies. Areas include Marine Energy Accelerators, & Entrepreneurs Fast Track. Grant of up to £500,000 for 3 – 5 years.
Digital Social Research Community Activities
Aims to provide researchers with funds to support ideas exchanges, training in digital social research tools & methods, outreach events & partnerships. Grant of £5,000.
Dunhill Medical Trust Research Grants
Support high quality research aimed at improving the health and wellbeing of older people; care of older people, including rehabilitation & palliative care, & reseach into the causes & treatments of disease, disability & frailty related to ageing. Grant of £10,000 to £500,000 for up to 18 months (up to 3 years for exceptionally).
Esmée Fairbairn Foundation Main Fund
Interests; The Arts; Education & Learning; The Environment; & Enabling Disadvantaged People to Participate fully in Society. Priorities; addressing significant gaps in provision, good practice, challenging convention; enterprising approaches, influencing policy. Grant average £79,000.
Gatsby Charitable Foundation (Sainsbury Family Charitable Trust) Grants programme
Awards are made to chosen organisations covering a wide area of interest: economic & social research, science & engineering education, mental health, plant science, arts, social renewal & other general interests. Grants are rarely given in response to unsolicited applications. Grant of £1,000 to £2million.
James S McDonnell Foundation (USA) 21st Century Science Initiative
Invests in the acquisition of new knowledge & in the responsible application of knowledge for solving the real world problems. 3 programmes; Studying Complex Systems; Brain cancer research; & Understanding human cognition. Fellowship of up to €600,000 a year for up to 3 years.
Leverhulme Trust Research Fellowships
Research Fellowships are open to experienced researchers, particularly those who are or have been prevented by routine duties from completing a programme of original research. There are no restrictions on academic discipline, & awards are not limited to those holding appointments in higher education. The fellowship will provide research expenses over & above normal living costs & contribution towards replacement teaching costs. Fellowship of up to £45,000 for 3 to 4 months.
Leverhulme Trust Standard Research Project Grants
The great majority of awards involve a spend of up to £250,000 over a duration of two to three years. If compelling evidence is provided, awards may be made for sums between £250,000 & £500,000 for research over a period of up to five years.
Support is provided through the Science for Peace & Security (SPS) Programme for the organisation of Advanced Research Workshops; meetings to enable a small group of experts to make a critical assessment of existing knowledge on new important topics & identify directions for future research. Workshop should address the security-related Priority Research Topics of Defence against Terrorism & Other Threats to Security.
To advance electronic communications in Partner countries and Afghanistan. To improve the Internet connectivity of research & educational institutes & to enable their staff & students in developing & maintaining contacts with the international scientific community.
Support is provided via the Science for Peace & Security (SPS) Programme for applied research & development projects in NATO Partner & Mediterranean countries. Proposals must address the security-related Priority Research Topic areas of Defence against Terrorism & Other Threats to Security.
Nuffield Foundation Nuffield Foundation – Social Science Small Grants Scheme
To meet the cost of postdoctoral research assistance, research materials, data collection & analysis, & travel & subsistence in the UK & overseas. Grant of up to £15,000.
Oak Foundation Programme Grants
Programmes: Child Abuse; Environment; Housing & Homelessness; International Human Rights; Issues Affecting Women; Learning Differences; and Special Interest Grants. Criteria: Target root causes of problems; Are replicable either within a sector or across geographical locations; Include plans for long-term sustainability; Have secured co-funding; Strive to collaborate with like-minded organisations; Value the participation of people (including children) & communities. Grant minimum of £25,000 with no maximum stated.
Rees Jeffreys Road Fund Grants
The Fund provides financial assistance for the education of transport professionals, improvement of the roadside environment & research into all aspects of roads, road usage & road traffic. Grant of up to £40,000 (average is £10,000).
Rockefeller Foundation Grants
To promote the well-being of humanity around the world. Themes; Basic Survival Safeguards; Global Health; Climate & Environment; Urbanization; Social & Economic Security. Initiatives; Developing Climate Change Resilience; Strengthening Food Security: Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa; Protecting American Workers’ Economic Security: Campaign for American Workers; Promoting Equitable, Sustainable Transportation; Linking Global Disease Surveillance Networks; Transforming Health Systems; Advancing Innovation Processes to Solve Social Problems; Harnessing the Power of Impact Investing. Very large grants possible.
Royal Academy of Engineering Research Chairs
Support for a full-time professorial appointment for five years in any engineering-related subject in the UK. Chair-holders are expected to lead a research group, & are encouraged to publish research results as widely as possible to gain international recognition.
Royal Academy of Engineering Senior Research Fellowships
Support to enable academic researchers at UK universities to progress in their chosen engineering-related field, whilst benefiting from & contributing to an established centre of excellence.
Royal Society Brian Mercer Feasibility Awards
Initial support to test the feasibility of a project, enabling holders to investigate the technical & economical feasibility of commercialising an aspect of their scientific research, possibly in conjunction with a third party. Grant of up to £30,000.
Sainsbury Family Charitable Trusts Grants programme
Unsolicited applications are rarely successful. Collectively, the Trusts support a wide range of interests, both in the UK & overseas, from: arts; disadvantaged children; homelessness; parenting & child welfare; social housing; social welfare; health welfare; medical research; urban regeneration/environment; environmental projects; education; Christian causes; developing countries. Grant from £1,000 to £4million.
Funding for small & medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the UK to engage in research & development projects in the strategically important areas of science, engineering & technology, from which successful new products, processes & services could emerge. Pre start-ups, start-ups, & small & medium-sized businesses from all sectors may apply. Grant of up to £250,000.
Universities Federation for Animal Welfare UFAW – Research & Project Awards
To research & non-research projects in the UK that promote animal welfare or examine animal welfare issues. Organisations applying must be able to demonstrate how their research will address the welfare of farm, companion, laboratory, captive wild animals & free living wild animals where welfare is compromised by humans. Grant minimum of £3,500 with no maximum stated.
Wellcome Trust Strategic Translation Awards
Projects must address an unmet need in healthcare or in applied medical research, offer a potential new solution, & have a realistic expectation that innovation will be developed further by the market.
Wellcome Trust Biomedical fellowships
Support for postdoctoral researchers in basic biomedical science at each stage of their career. Fellowship with salary and expenses covered for up to 7 years.
Wellcome Trust Joint Basic & Clinical PhD Programmes
Supporting the most promising basic or medically qualified clinicians who wish to undertake both rigorous basic & clinical science research training. Fellowship with salary and expenses covered for up to 4 years.
Wellcome Trust New Investigator Awards
Support world-class researchers no more than 5 years from appointment to 1st academic position, but can show they have the ability to innovate & drive advances in their field. Articulate a compelling long-term vision for their research & demonstrate talent, track record & originality to achieve it. Fellowship of £100,000 to £450,000 a year for up to 7 years.
Wellcome Trust R&D for Affordable Healthcare in India
India-specific. Grant of up to £100,000 for 5 years.
Wellcome Trust Senior Investigator Awards
Support exceptional, world-class researchers, who hold an established academic position & have a compelling long-term vision for their research. Will support researchers with an international track-record of significant achievement, have demonstrated the originality & impact of their research, & are leading their field. Fellowship of £100,000 to £425,000 a year for up to 7 years.
X Prize Foundation The Archon X Prize for Genomics
Genomics; to understand how disease develops at the molecular level, & how we can more precisely detect, prevent & treat disease according to the individual’s genomic profile. Rapid & inexpensive genomic sequencing technology is required to advance this new field of personalized medicine. Prizes of up tp $10million, $10,000 per genome.
